Interpreter
An interpreter in criminal proceedings ensures that all parties involved understand the proceedings and can communicate clearly. Suitable interpreters must be engaged if a person involved does not have sufficient command of the German language or if communication difficulties exist due to a hearing or speech impairment. This is regulated, among other provisions, in Section 126 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (StPO).
Linguistic understanding is a prerequisite for a fair criminal trial. Anyone who does not understand questions or cannot correctly grasp statements risks making inaccurate or incomplete statements. Language barriers should not lead to legal disadvantages.

Interpreters in criminal proceedings
Criminal proceedings can only be conducted fairly if every accused person understands what they are being accused of and what rights they have. That is precisely what an interpreter in criminal proceedings ensures. They translate statements, questions, cautions and key elements of the proceedings into a language the person concerned understands.
Particularly in criminal law, even misunderstandings can have serious consequences. Misunderstood questions, inaccurate translations or linguistic uncertainty can distort statements and influence the course of the proceedings.
