Anyone wishing to advertise food products must adhere to a strict legal framework.

According to the European Regulation on nutrition and health claims made on foods, the claims “low fat” or “light”, for example, may only be used in advertising for products that contain less than 3 g of fat/100 g in the case of solid foods or less than 1.5 g of fat/100 ml in the case of liquid foods. The claim “low sugar” is only permitted if the product contains no more than 5 g of sugar per 100 g in the case of solid foods or 2.5 g of sugar per 100 ml in the case of liquid foods. The regulation lists numerous other examples in its annex.

Health claims such as “supports the intestinal flora” are generally prohibited and only permitted if a number of strict requirements are met, which in turn are regulated in the European Regulation on nutrition and health claims made on foods.
