In Austria, there is generally an absolute ban on tobacco advertising and sponsorship. This includes, for example:
- Advertising for filterless cigarettes;
- Advertising for tobacco products if it creates the impression that the consumption of tobacco products is harmless to health;
- Advertising for tobacco products in the form of comics;
Exceptions to the Advertising Ban
Specifically excluded from the advertising ban is advertising that is exclusively directed at persons active in the tobacco trade, such as tobacconists.
Advertising by Tobacconists
Inside the tobacconist’s shop and on its exterior, tobacconists are generally permitted to display advertising for tobacco products.
Broadcast Advertising
On broadcast media, i.e., on TV and radio, all forms of advertising for tobacco products are prohibited.
Warning Notices
On the packaging of tobacco products intended for smoking, a warning notice must be affixed to the front. This may read “Smoking can be deadly” or similar. There are also precise specifications regarding the size of the warning notice, which are regulated in the Tobacco Act.
