Tobogganing Recommendations

The Austrian Tobogganing Association has published 10 tobogganing recommendations to avoid accidents while tobogganing as much as possible.

The tobogganing recommendations are rules of conduct, non-compliance with which can establish fault in the event of an accident.

The tobogganer must take into account the dangers of tobogganing through a controlled driving style adapted to the terrain and his abilities. He must drive with visibility and maintain the necessary safety distances.

Full Text of the Tobogganing Recommendations

1. Be considerate of other toboggan run users

Behave in a way that does not endanger or harm anyone else.

2. Observe closures and warning signs

Ensure that the route is open for tobogganing. Inform yourself about the course and condition of the toboggan run.

3. Use good equipment: quality toboggan, protective helmet, sturdy footwear

For safety reasons, no plastic bobs or plastic sleds.

4. Ascend on the right and in single file

Only cross the toboggan run at clear points.

5. Ride in a controlled manner, with clear visibility, and keep your distance

Adjust your speed and riding style to your ability, the toboggan run, the snow, ice, and weather conditions, as well as the traffic density.

6. Make yourself noticeable

Warn inattentive ascenders (bells, loud shouting).
In darkness: headlamp and reflective clothing.

7. Wait for your companions at clear points

Ensure that your group is complete.
Never stop at narrow and blind spots.

8. Tobogganing on ski slopes is dangerous and forbidden

The risk of collision with skiers is high.
Frozen toboggan tracks at night impair the slope quality.

9. No Dogs

Dogs are difficult to manage during ascent and descent, and there is a high risk of collision with descending tobogganers on the mostly narrow toboggan runs.

10. No Impairment by Alcohol or Medication

Intoxicants impair reaction time and reduce correct risk assessment.
